‘love shouldn’t’

Love shouldn’t be earned
Love should be given in mutual
surrender and nurturing
Love shouldn’t be about your
‘better half’
Or being afraid they will leave

Love shouldn’t be handled like
an egg with kid gloves
Afraid to break it and spill it on
the dirt, lost forever,
trapped by the thought of
potential life and joy.

Love shouldn’t be handled like
jewellery over the sink,
always afraid that it might slip
through your fingers and
disappear.

Love shouldn’t feel like
gambling, hoping for
something to grant you the next
wave of validation or ecstasy.

Love shouldn’t be an addiction,
although it can feel like it.
Where time and boundaries don’t
matter for a while,
and you let yourself get lost in a misty twilight where it
always feels like everything is
okay, and you never truly felt
joy before.

Love shouldn’t be chasing that
high, that safety, that comfort.
Love shouldn’t feel like airport
goodbyes when he leaves the
room, nor hairs standing up
when she comes home.

Love should be as you are, like
a heartbeat, soft, ever
present, steady, always
consistent, and always warm.
