‘a hurt that can wait’

I know you’ ve been hurting
But not the sudden kind
More l ike a leak in the back of the fridge
Or a blinking red engine light

The kind that you should get to
But you tell yourself it’ll be alright
Like your own private global warming
Like a dripping in the night

It’s the loose thread that you pick at
That might unravel everything
But you keep yourself distracted
So you never have to notice it

It’ s a weight that rests so heavy
You can feel it in your shoulders
The kind that you get used to
But makes you feel a little older

It’s the kind that stops your smile
Before it reaches your eyes
The kind that seems to mute the sun,
Before your heart feels the light

Until it becomes a part of you
Makes friends with your other scars

But maybe you only tolerate it
Because to you, it’s who you are
