‘crooked grin’

The hardest part of learning to love yourself
Is saying goodbye
To the habits that harm
To the lovers who lie

To the friendships that you thought
Would endure forever
But you deserve pieces
That fit together

It means displeasing people
To refocus on self
When all you’ve tried to do
Is please everyone else

And for all these lost pieces
It’ s okay to grieve
Like you might run your tongue
Over where a tooth used to be

It hurt to take out
And now you can heal
But it doesn’t make the pain
Any less real

And as with your tooth
You won’t put it back in
You’ll take pride
And show off
Your brand new, crooked grin
